Calculators, while a helpful tool, can get in the way of a child's math learning process. To ensure a calculator won't become a problem in your household, follow the tips below.

How to Teach Your Child to Use a Calculator

  1. Before you even think about letting your child use a calculator, you need to be certain that they understand and are able to work out basic math operations on their own.
  2. You can also teach them that there are other tools they can use to calculate the result of an operation that won't hinder their learning process. For instance, they can use pencil and paper to that end. Just don't let them use their fingers.
  3. A route you could take is that of having a conversation about calculator usage with your child. Your child my be more receptive to you than you think, so help them realize why they should learn basic math first.
  4. Once the time comes, you will need to provide the right calculator for your child. This should be a standard calculator (not a scientific or financial one). You should also sit down with them to teach them how to use it.
  5. Finally, if you are letting your child use a calculator, try to limit its use. For instance, they can use it only to verify the answers that they already calculated on their own.
